The runways are intact along with the tower and hangars, all extensively upgraded recently. The airfield is much as the FAA left it with the dummy deck still visible. The only major additions added to the airfield have been the Ski-slope, Armoury and a Water tower. The centre of the main runway was recently resurfaced to allow fixed wing traffic.

A X3TH Bedford Thurleigh N 52 13 50 W 000 27 51 1941 8th AF. 306th Bomb Grp Disused Was RAE Bedford (EGVW) - closed 1993. 5 runways still extant plus many buildings in the vicinity (wind tunnels etc). When Thurleigh was being developed after the war, the original plan included a 5-mile runway extending out to Little Staughton and with its maintenance area close to Twinwoods Farm. Defence cuts stopped this but just South of Thurleigh a narrow country lane still suddenly splits into two carriageways as it passes through a dip where a taxiway to Twinwoods was due to have passed across!

The Flying School moved here in 1917 and in 1918 it was renamed RAF Winton. The site was handed back to B.A.C. in May 1919 with passenger services to London. It was redeveloped as a Racecourse from 1925 to 1928 but was also the venue for Air Race events. By 1931 the horse racing had ceased and the site was sold for housing.

Flying Boat Station Recreation Now a large caravan site, with vans and toilet blocks and so forth set out on and around the concrete dispersal tracks and circles. The large Sunderland sized slipway survives. RAF buildings remain including an electricity generation station. A curious shaped dock, finished just in time to be no longer needed, is shaped snug to a flying boat bow and hull with jetties alongside port and starboard to access engines etc. Woodland walks have way points at ammunition stores, and concrete nissen hut bases. In the yard of the former castle there is a small WW2 museum amid displays more to do with nature and conservation.
