Test Track |
In 1958 when motorways first opened many car engines blew up as motorists
drove them at high speed for the first time. Most cars did not handle well
at speed and the brakes were not much use either, fading rapidly when applied
at 70 mph. The motor industry formed M.I.R.A. and constructed a proper track
to test cars properly (at last). Fenny Drayton was selected because it was
central and on the A5. |

RNAS Seaplane Base. HMS Osprey |
Disused |
RN. Closed in early 1999. At that time it had a short runway (helo station),
a large number of buildings, and large parking aprons. By 2001 the tank
farm was demolished and the hangar buildings were in process of demolition.
The site is now much reduced but still appears active - the short runway
is marked closed but has been repainted and moved counter clockwise. |

Most of the runways and peri-track still exist although part of the SW
peri was dug up recently. The southern third of the main N/S runway is used
for farming storage but the northern two-thirds is still in use as a private
airfield. It is owned by Grosvenor Estates and there are a few aircraft
hangered there. There are no original buildings left standing. |

exist under the grass & lie along the western edge of the field. The existing

Defending the area was 33 squadron and a field to the North West of South
Cave was brought into use as a night landing air strip.(Apparently on the
9th August 1916 there were up to ten Zeppelins bombing Hull and one flew
over South Cave). It became disused after the war and left no trace. |

De Havilland. 1 EFTS. Closed in 1934. De Havilland first set up an aircraft
assembly shop at Stag Lane in 1920 ( then a green field site) and I guess
that adjacent to it in those days there would be a 500 metre strip of grass,
more than enough for all possible needs well into the future). In 1930 De
Havilland moved on to larger facilities at Hatfield - Stag Lane concentrated
on De Havilland engine production. The grass strip slowly disappeared under
concrete and bricks. |

The runway layout is still visible although the main runway is now a road
that takes you from A31 into the New Forest. The width has been reduced
to standard road dimensions by the use of piles of earth that has now been
covered in grass. You can still the original runway width, however. The
disposal points are still in place and the foundations of the various buildings
are visible. There is also a large pond close to the road (runway) and I
assume it is a bomb crater as it is circular and very large. Stoney Cross
is now used as a caravan park for tourists! The RAF Water Tower is still
in use and is painted in camo green. |

Despite the M56 ploughing right through the airfield a lot of it is still
intact. It is now referred to as Appleton and is primarily used for vehicle
testing. A strip north of the disused 09/27 is still in use. |
