A X5WH Wath Head Jenkins Cross N 54 49 04 W 003 06 40 1941 RAF. No.10 SLG. MSU Agriculture Wath Head had a grass strip, roughly 24/06, parallel to the A595, heavy-rollered to take the weight of the Bothas and Wellingtons that mainly used it. They were pushed back into the trees to the S of the strip for camouflage and the gaps cut in the line of trees can still be seen. The Receipt and Dispatch Hut and the remains of a Lewis Gun post are still visible. On the N side of the A595 remains one of the original 12 Nissan huts that housed the personnel. As part of the concealment policy the field continued to be grazed - the sheep had to be cleared from the runway to accommodate arrivals. Wath Head was used in the early part of the war by Kirkbride but towards the end most machines came from the base at Dumfries.

One runway was still in periodic use for crop dusting. The site is still in use as a secure light industrial site and little change to the airfield has been made. (5/2006)
A X0WE Westgate -- N 51 23 09 E 001 20 30 1914 WW1 use only. n/k Set up to provide floatplane cover for naval bases at Chatham & Sheerness. Westgate seaplane station opened at St. Mildreds Bay on Aug. 1st 1914. Hangar & Slipway was built together with Wireless Station. In early 1915 land on the cliffs to the East of the seaplane base was requisitioned as an aerodrome and huts and hangars were erected to support the land planes. After accidents the site was considered too restrictive for landplane ops and the war-flight was moved to Manston in Jul. 1916. Westgate aerodrome was abandoned. Ops ceased in late summer 1919 & Westgate seaplane stn. closed on Feb 7th 1920.

The site was very small and Armstrong Whitworth moved out in 1934 and set up new assembly buildings at Baginton airfield Coventry. The old Whitley airfield site became industrial, and of late it has been completely obliterated when Jaguar Cars built a large Engineering Design facility on the site.
